Broken and Tired

Look at her.  Analyze her.  Her clothes, her air, her posture, her expression… even the color of her nail polish.

But then all those details are insignificant to who she is inside.

Right?

But then… you could learn so much form just that picture - if you knew what to pay attention to, or knew the stories behind those insignificant details.

And then, you also couldn’t learn, because it just doesn’t work that way anymore - when two strangers can say hi and pick up a friendship right then.  It doesn’t seem to work without something to bond them together from a friend’s death to a preferred coffee shop.

This girl – what do you know about her?

She’s wearing moccasins, Sevens jeans, a high school soccer sweatshirt, neon pink nail polish, a ring, straight hair, thinking expression, and a heart clip holding up a quarter of her hair back.

Make your analysis now; judge, compare, assume.

This is what you probably didn’t know.

She’s not and never was the type to follow trends, a characteristic passed on to her from an ex best friend she once had.  The moccasins were a gift form two fairly new close friends, one much closer than the other.  When she opened the box last January, her emotions were surprised, then guilty.  Surprised that they had gotten her these, when she had never really shown desire to go along with the trend; guilty because they weren’t a cheap gift, and she didn’t really have any new desire to wear them.

But here she was, many months later, wearing the gift, because not only were the warm and smelled of vanilla, but mostly because they made the two friends happy to know their gift was accepted.

The Seven jeans on the other hand, these she always loved, along with the mother that had helped her pick them out.  They not only (hopefully) made her look good, but also gave her a sense of accomplishment, knowing they were her own investment, and since she was unfortunately far from rich, she was able to get the trendy and expensive designer clothing.

The school sweatshirt was her school sweatshirt, but she’s not playing soccer for the school, and never has.  It was borrowed from a friend.  And even though it wasn’t a sweatshirt that represented her, she was as comfortable as she ever was in a sweatshirt.  And this sweatshirt was one of those really good, comfy sweatshirts.

The same friend painted her nails the neon pink shade.  When she was asked if she’d let her paint her nails, she was taken aback, but recovered and accepted.  It reminded her of the old days, with another ex best friend would claim her nails with a color, showing of her careful perfection.  She would make it known she was best at everything, that she would have everything... Of course, this old friend was one she didn’t really regret not having any more.  This friend was one she was actually fine without.

Ahh – the ring.  It was a simple silver band that mended into two bland dolphins that met, enclosing around her pinky.  She didn’t know where she had gotten it, or when, but it was a keepsake of the old collection she had of dolphins, her childhood passion.

The heart clip?  She found it on her way out of her house, simply lying there - a cute yellow heart clip - and even though it didn't go with her outfit, even though it wasn't strong enough to hold back her hair, she clipped it in, maybe just to know she was symbolizing something simply amazing, that everyone probably wanted.
